2018 Colorado Classic four stage cycling race power analysis — Best Bike Split

All stages of the 2018 Colorado Classic were modeled using the Best Bike Split performance modeling software. For non Time Trial stages the peloton was modeled as a single entity using the typical pulling power exhibited by riders at the front of the main group. We then used the Time Analysis tool to highlight specific sections of the course that could influence race day strategy.

The Colorado Classic is a unique modeling challenge compared to European stage races — the entire event takes place at elevation, with the Vail Pass ITT on Stage 2 cresting above 10,600 feet and even the Denver circuit stages sitting a mile above sea level. Riders who train at sea level can expect measurable power drops that our model accounts for through adjusted air density calculations. The race format is also varied enough that no single rider type dominates — the punchy Mountain Plaza circuit suits different strengths than the pure watt-per-kilo demands of the Stage 3 RiNo mountain stage. Use the Time Analysis tool on any stage to see how small adjustments to power, drag, and weight play out across this compact but demanding four-day race.

Stage Type Date Avg. Watts Avg. Speed Time
Stage 1 (Mountain Plaza Circuit) Hilly 08/16/2018 326 w 44 km/h 02:19:25
Stage 2 (Vail Pass Time-Trial) Individual Time Trial 08/17/2018 391 w 40 km/h 00:24:20
Stage 3 (RiNo Art District) Mountain 08/18/2018 326 w 43 km/h 03:51:28
Stage 4 (Mile High City Circuit) Hilly 08/19/2018 338 w 46 km/h 00:19:03
