What started in 2010 as a 100-rider grassroots ride through the Nebraska backroads has become one of the most respected events on the American gravel calendar. The Lauf Gravel Worlds GW150 is the self-described Officially Unofficial Gravel World Championship, and the culture built around it - from the Captain of the Gravel Seas overall title to the celebrated DFL Champion award - reflects everything that makes grassroots gravel racing worth showing up for.

Race Overview

The 2026 edition marks another year of a brand-new course through Southeastern Nebraska. The route changes annually, which means prior Strava segments and GPS overlays are only partially useful for planning. What stays the same year over year is the character of the terrain: open skies, relentless wind, Nebraska farm gravel, and cumulative rolling terrain that wears on legs in ways the elevation profile alone does not advertise.

The full event week runs August 19-23. The GW300 starts Friday evening (August 21), and the GW150, GW75, and run events launch Saturday morning. The start and finish are at the Lancaster Event Center on the northeast side of Lincoln, where camping, expo, and spectator access are all available.

No outside support is strictly enforced. Gravel Worlds is a fully self-supported event. No team vehicles, no crew, no family meetups on course or at checkpoints. Riders may use convenience stores and gas stations found along the route. The GW150 includes two sponsored checkpoints stocked with water and basic supplies.

Finishing Times References

The 2024 men's winner, Simen Nordahl Svendsen, set the current GW150 course record at 6:48:46 - the fastest the race has ever been run. The 2025 edition brought a new course and a Friday night pre-race storm that muddied key sectors; Matthew Beers won in 6:58:40 on altered surfaces. Women's winning times have been strikingly consistent across the two most recent editions, both landing just under the 8-hour mark.

Year Men Women DFL
2025 6:58:40 (Beers) 7:57:07 (Kloser) Not confirmed
2024 6:48:46 (Svendsen) CR 7:57:46 (Stephens) 15:08:03 (Florence)
2023 8:00:10 (Borstelmann) 9:15:28 (Stephens) >Not confirmed

Median note: Full results for the men's open field in 2024 show approximately 81 confirmed finishers in the non-elite GW150 category. Based on BikeReg data, the median finishing time for that group sits around 10:35-11:00. Exact combined-field median (elite and open, men and women) is not available without login-gated timing data. The 2023 edition ran notably slower due to extreme heat; use 2024 as the benchmark for typical-conditions planning.

Course Description

The GW150 course changes every year, so there is no fixed route guide. That said, the character of the Nebraska terrain around Lincoln is consistent enough that preparation should follow a clear template regardless of the 2026 routing.

The course starts and finishes at the Lancaster Event Center on the northeast side of Lincoln, where the city drops off almost immediately into endless gravel. Routes typically head south and east of Lincoln into the rolling farmland of Lancaster and surrounding counties - a landscape of alternating creek drainages and ridge lines that add up to more elevation gain than the flat Midwest reputation suggests. The 2026 course carries approximately 10,000 feet of elevation gain over 150 miles, nearly all of it in the form of repeated 50-150 foot rollers with occasional longer sustained climbs.

Surface conditions are typical Nebraska gravel: packed limestone chat and crushed rock on the main farm roads, with occasional softer sections on county maintenance roads and compacted dirt. After rain, sections can turn greasy quickly. The 2025 edition is the most recent example of a storm reshaping the race - a Friday night storm muddied key sectors before Saturday's start. Plan for variable surface grip and understand that conditions can differ meaningfully between the morning and midday portions of a 10-12 hour effort.

Wind is the feature of Nebraska gravel that no elevation profile captures. The open farmland offers no shelter, and prevailing southerly winds in August can mean significant sustained headwind for long stretches. In a year with strong south wind, sections heading south become a genuine physical toll late in the race. Check race-week forecasts carefully, note wind direction, and plan which parts of the course are likely headwind vs. tailwind. The experienced field treats wind direction as a tactical variable, not just an atmospheric nuisance.

The actual course will be announced closer to race day. Gravel Worlds releases the 2026 route in the weeks before the event. Check gravelworlds.com for the official course file. Historical routes have been posted on Ride with GPS and Strava after each edition and are worth studying for terrain character even if the exact roads differ.

Checkpoints and Support Structure

Gravel Worlds runs on a strict self-support model. The event does not provide crew access, and outside support from a team vehicle, family, or friends at any road crossing is not permitted. Riders are responsible for everything between the start and the checkpoints.

CP1 - First sponsored checkpoint, water and basic supplies. Approximate distance varies by year; typically falls in the 60-75 mile range. Confirmed in race week materials.

CP2 - Second sponsored checkpoint, water and basic supplies. Typically in the 110-125 mile range. Confirmed in race week materials.

Gas stations and convenience stores along the route are fair game. The course is intentionally routed past several. Check the course map for known stops before race day.

No drop bags are available at Gravel Worlds. Everything needed for the full 150 miles must be carried on the bike or sourced from gas stations and checkpoints. For a 10-13 hour effort in heat, plan for a minimum of 2-3 liters of hydration capacity at all times between resupply points.

Forecasted Weather

Condition Value Notes
Avg High (August) 84–88°F Temperatures peak mid-July and ease toward late August
Avg Low (August) 64°F Start-line temps are comfortable; the day heats up fast
Heat Index Up to 91°F 74% average relative humidity with no shade on course
Wind 9 mph avg Sustained, with open farmland and zero wind shelter anywhere on course
Rain Days ~10 days/month August average

August 22 in Lincoln falls at the tail end of Nebraska's peak summer heat. Race morning at 5:55-6:30 AM will be manageable, typically mid-60s to low 70s, but temperatures rise quickly after sunrise and riders are in full sun with limited shade by mid-morning. The combination of heat and humidity means heat index values can regularly exceed the air temperature by 5-10 degrees, especially during any mid-day slowdowns or extended time at gas station stops.

The 2023 edition is the benchmark for worst-case heat conditions. Mid-race temperatures and extreme humidity pushed finishing times across the field 60-90 minutes slower compared to 2024. Plan hydration and electrolyte needs for a genuine heat race, not a comfortable late-summer morning.

Wind deserves equal weight. The course is entirely exposed farmland with no meaningful wind breaks. A 9 mph average masks the variability - race-day gusts of 20+ mph are not uncommon in August, and a sustained south wind on a southbound stretch can add significant time and effort to 10-20 mile sections.

Race Intelligence

Gravel Worlds does not have cutoff times with pull authority the way altitude events do. The race rewards self-awareness and punishes early overreach. For most of the field, the primary risks are:

Going out too hard with the lead group. The pro men start at 5:55 AM and the general field at 6:30 AM. When the general field catches early starters, the pace can surge. With 150 miles ahead, a race-effort first hour in Nebraska heat is a costly mistake.

Under-fueling between checkpoints. With no crew access and long gaps between resupply points, running low on food or electrolytes before a gas station stop is a real risk. On a 10-12 hour day in heat, most riders need 300-400 calories per hour minimum once fully into the effort.

The wind surprise. If you haven't ridden the Nebraska plains before, sustained wind on a fully exposed gravel road for multiple hours is a different kind of fatigue than climbing. It wears on the upper body and on mental freshness. Plan RPE targets assuming wind resistance for at least some sustained portions of the day.

The miles 110-135 trap. Gravel Worlds veterans consistently describe the final quarter of the race as where things fall apart for underprepared riders. With the second checkpoint behind you and the finish still far away, this is the section that rewards early pacing discipline and punishes anyone who burned matches in the first half they couldn't afford to burn.

Gravel Worlds culture note: The DFL Champion receives genuine recognition at this event. The First to Last initiative in recent editions extended cutoff windows and introduced a finish-line celebration for the final finisher. Everyone who completes the voyage is part of the race.

2026 Gravel Worlds FAQs

Your target power depends on your FTP, body weight, bike setup, and finish time goal — not a generic number that applies to every rider. The variables that matter most are your current fitness, your aerodynamic position, and the specific demands of the 2026 Gravel Worlds course. The best approach is to build a personalized plan in Best Bike Split using your actual athlete profile — you'll get a segment-by-segment power target based on your specific inputs rather than a one-size-fits-all recommendation.

Every course is different and requires its own unique pacing plan. On a multi-loop course, fatigue and wind shift between laps and what felt comfortable early can become unsustainable later. On an out-and-back, headwind in one direction becomes tailwind in the other — an asymmetry a flat power target can't account for. On a point-to-point or single-loop course, you only get one pass at every section with no opportunity to recalibrate. When you create a Best Bike Split race plan for 2026 Gravel Worlds, we model the specific demands of that course so your pacing strategy reflects the race you're actually doing.

Significantly — and the effect varies depending on the course profile. On flatter courses, wind and aerodynamics become the dominant variables in your speed equation, more so than on courses where gradient naturally dictates effort. On climbing-heavy courses, your power-to-weight ratio and how you manage the descents matter most. A Best Bike Split race plan lets you model the specific conditions forecasted for 2026 Gravel Worlds, so your targets reflect what you'll actually face on race day rather than what the course looks like on paper.

It depends on the course and how well you pace it. Flat, fast courses offer genuine PR potential but only if you execute correctly — without terrain to naturally regulate your effort, going out too hard early is easy and costly. Technical or hilly courses reward smart segment-by-segment pacing over raw fitness. Either way, a physics-based race plan from Best Bike Split gives you a realistic split prediction based on your actual profile so you know before race day what a well-executed bike leg looks like for you specifically.

Yes — and this is one of the most underused features. Once you've built your 2026 Gravel Worlds race plan, you can export it directly to Zwift, TrainerRoad, or any ERG-mode trainer for indoor sessions, or push it to your Garmin, Wahoo, or Karoo for outdoor rides. Training on your actual race plan means you arrive at 2026 Gravel Worlds already knowing what your target effort feels like at every section of the course — not just what the number says on paper.

Using Best Bike Split for Gravel Racing

Coach Dave Schell of Kaizen Endurance wrote a great primer on how gravel racers should think about course modeling, from drafting value and group dynamics to equipment selection and aid station timing. It's definitely worth a read before you build your plan.
