Roskilde to Nyborg
Stage 2 / Saturday, July 2nd
The first road stage of the tour has the opportunity for early intrigue. With a 200+ km ride through Denmark wind, which can and most likely will play a significant factor. Starting in the Viking city of Roskilde, the course heads northwest to the coast before winding south along the water leading to the Great Belt Crossing. With 20 km to go, riders will face two of the world's longest suspension bridges (6.8 km and 6.6 km) separated by a short 2.5 km island. If the winds are howling, some teams might feel a bit froggy and make a push before the bridge and work to stay away in the potential crosswinds.
Weather Forecast
Famous Danish weather will be on full display in stage 2. The forecast calls for wind and as the riders turn south along the coast we could see some echelaons and possible splits. Depending on how the wind shifts throughout the day the last 20 km (with 13+ over bridges) could exercerbate these splits. That said currently the conditions call for more of a head wind which will help the peloton pull in any break aways (especially if any of the GC contenders are in trouble).
Stage Analysis
The opening TT showed that some of the GC contenders are already on amazing form. Tadej Pogaca was the best of the bunch; however, Primoz Roglic and BBS sponsored Trek Segafredo rider Bauke Mollema limtied loses to 10 seconds. This is the first time the tour has been to Denmark, so we expect the local riders to get a bit of time in the spot-light. The huge crowds at the finish would love to see Trek Segafredo's Mads Pedersen get a win in his home country. We will have to see if some magic can happen or if the headwinds pull the race back into a sprint finish.
